Has a long, hard day at work ever got you feeling like you could fall straight asleep at your desk? Or maybe it’s the night before your new job and you’re so full of anticipation that you can’t sleep, so you inevitably end up feeling shattered on your first day. Well, that’s exactly what happened with one little puppy from Rhode Island. The 12-week-old puppy woke up extra early for his monumental swearing-in ceremony, but the little guy just couldn’t keep his eyes open and ended up sleeping through the whole ceremony.
“He plays really hard and he sleeps really hard,” “When he’s not playing, he’s sleeping, which is kind of tough because he sleeps a lot.”, Officer Keith Medeiros, Brody’s handler, told The Dodo.
Yep, the little guy was in such a state of excitement that it was literally too much for him, and he zoned out on the desk, leaving the officers to get on with the job.
So how did Brody get his job? Apparently, the police department was debating over whether to bring on a narcotics or bomb-sniffing dog into the team, but Mederios, the school resource officer, had another idea. He instead opted for a therapy dog.
The whole team loved the idea and Brody joined the team in mid-March 2020. At first the timing was a worry, as Brody needed to be exposed to a typical day at work whilst he was still new, and the coronavirus pandemic had made things very difficult.
But it turned out that Brody had arrived at a perfect time. Medeiros said:
“People are really stressed, especially in law enforcement. Just by walking in the police department with Brody, people immediately smile, they immediately get into a better place. They want to pet him, want to hug him and it’s just a really good thing.”
Brody is part of a new initiative and he will be visiting schools and nursing homes and spending time connecting with the local community. He’ll also be working alongside other officers and help comfort victims of crime. With such an important and exciting job it’s no wonder that this little guy needs all the sleep he can get.
Little Brody may have slept through his ceremony, but he’s just saving his energy for all the important work he has ahead of him.
He’s clearly the best dog and the people of Rhode Island are lucky to have such a delighted and dedicated pup as a member of the local police.
